Ghosts on Campus.

I work in Law Enforcement as a campus police officer, and on week-ends I unfortunately am on graveyard shift. My shift runs from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., wonderful hours as you can imagine. The campus at which I work is located in coastal Mississippi, it is a temporary campus, as the permanent campus was heavily damaged during hurricane Katrina in 2005. This temporary location is in an old hospital building, only half is used by the school, while the other half has become a Hospice, which provides a homelike setting for terminally ill patients. I have no background information as to how many people may have passed away in this building, but I imagine it was several over the years.

I have always believed in ghosts and spirits inhabiting this world, always around us though we normally don't see or hear these ethereal beings. I have been witness to very strange occurrences during my nights here at the campus, though none have given me the feeling of something trying to do me harm, always benign in nature. There are numerous cameras installed throughout the campus side of the building, all have motion sensors. We can monitor these cameras from a monitor that is located on our office wall. We can check each one individually or view all at the same time using the split-screen option; I prefer the split-screen.

Over the past few weeks these ghostly occurrences have seemed to increase in frequency, the past three week-ends in particular. I have seen strange shapes and shadows moving through the hallways, the motion sensors have detected this activity as well. Last evening I was just returning to the office from doing an exterior patrol of the property. As I entered the front entrance, I noticed a man in red shirt and green pants walk across the end of the hallway in which I was facing. At first I thought nothing of it, as hospice staff frequently visit the vending machines on the campus side of the complex. I proceeded down the hallway, I myself was in need of a snack, I rounded the corner and to my surprise the man was nowhere to be seen. I know that this person could not have traveled the corridor so quickly without running, for it is a lengthy hallway; anyway I would have heard the person running, there would have been a slight echo. All the rooms along this passage are locked from the inside and only I have the keys that allow entry, I unlocked and checked every room and discovered no-one. As I continued my rounds I felt as if someone was watching me, the tiny hairs on the back of my neck were tingling and had stiffened, goose flesh covered my body. I reached an area of the building that had once been used as the operating theater, the air was freezing, yet ten feet beyond these rooms the air was very warm. The cold air was somehow limited to the operating room area, even the windows on the doors were covered with condensation. I turned around and walked, very quickly to my office.

I made it back to my office and sat down to finish my reports that I have to type out for each shift, occasionally glancing at the surveillance cameras monitor. I noticed the motion sensor on one camera that is aimed at the hallway outside of my office had been activated. I saw nothing, but at that instant I distinctly heard voices, I couldn't discern what was being said but they were definitely speaking in excited tones. I hurriedly exited the office to catch the intruder or intruders, as I left the office door it was if the voices were coming from the air directly in front of me. I was really spooked by this time, and quickly sat down at my desk to take in what had just transpired. I again glanced at the monitor on the wall and a different motion sensor was activated. This time in the library hallway, I could see a shadowy form moving along the hall passing the computers that were there for students to use. I was riveted to the screen, as I watched a chair that was at one of the computer desks was pulled out from underneath as if someone was going to sit down. I'd had enough, I had to investigate the ghostly form. I almost ran to the library hall, I rounded the corner and sure enough the chair had indeed been moved. Just as in the hallway where the operating rooms were, the air in the library hall was freezing. I could just make out what appeared to be woman or small man seated at the computer, I began to speak but the figure was gone with the blink of an eye.

I love working here at the campus, and every week-end I hope to catch a glimpse of my ghostly visitors. I am tempted to try to record some of the voices or to film the apparitions that I encounter while doing my rounds. Maybe I will, if I am successful I will post them here.
